In the Moment

Coromandel Walks

I wandered lonely as a cloud…well actually it was me, Don and Nicola who wandered but that doesn’t sound as nearly as romantic! There are heaps of walks all across Aotearoa – New Zealand and we plan to do quite a few, so we are breaking ourselves in gently with a few of the local ones here in Coromandel. There is a road that cuts from one side of the peninsular to the other called The 309. It is famous – or should I say infamous for the fact that it is a gravel road, very bendy, prone to rockfall & slips – oh and wild pigs! Here are some pictures of the walks we have done so far…

Long Bay to Tucks Bay Coastal walk

Kauri Block Walk – including Pa lookout point. A Pa is a Maori defensive settlement. The track up here was steep in places but what a view from the top!

Panoramic view from the Pa

Waiau Kauri Walk – Kauri Grove and Siamese Twins. The twins are two separate saplings that fused together at the base as they grew as they were so close together. Some of the Kauri in this grove 600 years old!

These pictures don’t do justice to the Kauri and just how enormous and amazing they are. There is a huge program of replanting this native ancient tree across the country and it is just brilliant to see both really ancient ones and new saplings.
