Tongaporutu
One really important thing you need to remember when you are staying anywhere on the coast is to check the tide times. As we didn’t, we had a brisk walk, if you can do that in super sticky papa mud, down to shoreline. What a sight!! Elephant Rock. I think it really does look like an elephant with its trunk in the water. And yes, that is black sand! The Three Sisters stand guard over the Elephant. As we walked back to our van, we spotted round bolders, just like Moeraki on the South Island. I think this one looks like an eye!
Our stop today is New Plymouth. Lots of art here, hence the giant wind wand! Created by Len Lye, it is a kinetic sculpture. And yes, it really does show wind direction. Our pitch for the night looks out to sea and we can hear the waves pounding below.
