Quiet day today, driving from Otaki Beach to Fielding. It was overcast at the start of the day and torrential rain by the time we pulled into our camp spot. Ah well, NZ spring! We have a last look at Kapiti from the other side and head off. In need of coffee, we stop at a cafe in Levin called Firebird. OMG! What a quirky, brilliant place. Great flat whites. Great treats – Don had Basque Cheesecake which he said was: “bloody good!” I had a cheese and kimchi scone which was the fluffiest scone I’ve ever eaten. And if that wasn’t enough, the wallpaper in the loo was day of the dead!!
On the way to Fielding, we stop at Bunnythorpe School. This is where Don’s mum Betty started her teaching career. It looks like a lovely place to learn.
We have a wander around Fielding and it starts to rain, as it’s Sunday and most of the shops are closed, we’ve decided to return for coffee in the morning to have another look around.
