In the Moment

A big tree in a big harbour…

We are slowly heading up north on the west coast and we are going VERY slowly. Pahi is at the end of a peninsula and the road here winds down over green hills. We camp at https://pahibeachholidaypark.co.nz/ overlooking Pahi wharf. It is very tranquil. It is here where we discover the most enormous fig, a Moreton Bay. Don stood behind one of the butresses and almost disappeared! Just a stunning tree. And what a treat that a kererū came and sat in the tree right by us.

After a very peaceful night, we travel a wee way around the coast and visit the Kauri Museum https://www.kaurimuseum.com/ What a brilliant place! We spent four hours here. Fascinating to see Māori mythology, engineering feats and lives of the Settlers and gumdiggers all in one place. The size of some kauri is just mind blowing. It’s also quite sad in a way to see just how much kauri forest had been felled. Also good to see new planting of these majestic trees as we travel around.

We camp for the night at Tinopai, right on the waters edge. Lovely.
