We may have found our spiritual home! Not only is Glenorchy stunningly beautiful, there is a certain feeling about the place that seems to calm and sooth the soul. We stayed at Mrs Woolly’s Camping Ground https://mrswoollyscampground.co.nz/ and from all directions, our view was mountains and beech forest. It is from here that you can access the Routeburn Track – one of New Zealand’s Great Walks. Glenorchy, also known as the ‘Top of the Lake’, sits at the northern tip of Lake Wakatipu and, as with a number of places in New Zealand, there are sites here that are linked with ‘The Lord of the Rings’ films. We did a day walk at the start/end of the Routeburn track and we were both totally enthralled by the beech forest and the Routeburn River as it runs through the gorge. There are a couple of DoC sites here and we stayed at Lake Sylvan for one night before heading back to Mrs Woolley’s, crossing the River Jordan to Paradise. These photos do not do justice to the majestic beauty of Glenorchy. It was with heavy hearts that we drove out of town. Hopefully we’ll be back one day. If you are ever in Queenstown, make the additional trip to the ‘Top of the Lake’, you won’t be disappointed!
