In the Moment

Bendigo & Welshtown

Well it’s hard NOT to visit a site that carries your family name. So after a long, dusty drive on a gravel road, we arrived at Welshtown in Bendigo. This area is another site that was part of the gold mining boom and bust era. It is riddled with incredibly deep mine shafts, ventilation shafts and remnants of buildings. On one part of the walk, you come across Pengelly’s Hotel – according to some information it was regarded as a 5* hotel! Well, the rooms are tiny so I hope it didn’t cost much. Mind you, the view is amazing! It is a great walk.

We spent a night at the freedom camp that sits on the edge of Lake Dunston. Also not a bad view! We stopped for coffee at Tarras, where there is a statue to Shrek the Sheep, who evaded sheering for FIVE years by hiding out in the rocky crags and caves in the Bendigo Hills! His fleece weighted 27kg when he was finally shorn -the average being 4.5kg https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shrek_(sheep)

We also had a quick flying visit back to Glendhu Bay. It was howling a gale and raining when we arrived, but boy oh boy, what a sight when we woke up! Snow on the mountains! We took our flat whites from ‘The Coffee Shack’ Wanaka https://www.thecoffeedojowanaka.com/the-coffee-shack-wanaka to the viewpont for Mt. Aspiring and just sat enjoying the view – In the Moment.
