Three for the price of one! You really do have so much to see along this stretch of the coast. Some amazing places to see seals, quite weird and wonderful geological strangeness and a couple of lighthouses thrown in for good measure!
Shag point is a great place to view seals. It is quite a drive off of the highway but it’s worth it. It also has it’s own boulders which are quite different from the ones just along the road a bit. They sit on a shelf and there are SO many, all in different stages of formation. Some, just empty craters, some half worn down by the relentless pounding of the waves and some ‘birthing’ out of the rock face. There was a path that lead you down to the beach but this is not managed and has since falling victim to a slip. You can see some boulders from the road – just peer politely over peoples fences!

Katiki Point is another great place to see seals, some are just laying on the grass as you walk out to the point – they can get quite aggressive so you have to be super careful when walking past or taking pictures. When we were here last, there was a steep pathway down to a hide where you could watch, in complete safety for the wildlife, seals and yellow eyed penguins. You are no longer able to do this. However, the walk out to the point is stunning and there is the chance you will see seals and possibly, if you are VERY lucky these gorgeous penguins that are in serious decline.

Moeraki known for it’s strange boulders and a fantastic restaurant that has sadly now closed. The saying “Time and tide wait for no man”, could apply to the boulders that are strewn across the beach at Moeraki. Some buried so deep in sand that you can only see their tops, some just forming within the rockface, some laying shattered allowing us to see the inside and some just there, in their entirety looking all stately. They really are ‘other worldly’. We ate at Fleur’s in 2014, the food was amazing as was the atmosphere and setting. Fleur has decided it is time to sell and the building is sitting, almost as if it is in a freeze frame of the end of a service, waiting for a new owner.
