It was good to be back in Kaikoura – we love it here! We went for a walk along the peninsular foreshore this time. It’s still amazing to think that some of what you are seeing was under water prior to the 2016 earthquake. We saw some imprints in the rock of what looked like giant scallop shells, no idea if they were fossils. We had to walk very carefully along parts of the path as there were a number of seals just hanging about, dozing.

From Kaikoura, we travelled along the inland road back to Marble Hill where we went for a great short walk up to the Maruia River Sluice Box which is a small canyon cut through the marble rock.

Our next stop was at the Maruia Falls which were created by the 1929 Murchison Earthquake.

The road to Murchison is really beautiful. Braided rivers, hills, mountains covered with cloud. Such a great drive. We had a walk down to the Buller river and came across an amazing tree carving. We also found a great little coffee cart!
