In the Moment

We celebrate a birthday boy!

Tuesday, we celebrated Don’s birthday. Asked what he wanted to do, he replied, “Eat fish & chips on Nic’s veranda with a beer and pavlova for pudding!” Of course, we have to have coffee in the morning first at Weta…https://www.facebook.com/people/Weta-Cafe/100057326295260/ As we had eaten some lovely snapper the night before, we head over to The Coromandel Oyster company for…oysters! https://www.coromandeloysters.co.nz/about-us This place is totally amazing. It sits on the waterfront. Uses old mussel barges for eating spaces. Has a wonderful lawn strewn with cushions. And, the food is SO tasty! We sit down to eat – Don has a paua fritter & battered oysters, I have battered mussels (green lip) and battered oyster & Nic has a hot dog and some battered oysters. Each dish was wonderful. Oysters were so fresh, fat and juicy. I’d spotted some men taking photos and overheard the word Instagram. Probably an Insta celeb. A little while later, a man approaches us holding out a huge plate of battered fish. Hi, he says, we’ve been filming and the kitchen made us so much food, we can’t finish it all. Would you like some? We all look at each other…Yes that would be lovely! Don asks what they’ve been filming. It’s a new show called ‘Off the Grid’ with the two chefs from MKR (My Kitchen Rules). There is so much fish that there is plenty to share with a family sitting nearby. As the film crew leave, we hear a cheery – Bon Appetite! It is Manu the show host. So not only have we met the local celeb – Helen Clark, we’ve also met International celebs!
