In the Moment

Where the beach stretches for miles…ninety of them!

Ahipara, where we revisit our favourite campsite from when we were travelling 10 years ago. It hasn’t changed a bit! Such a lovely laid back, slightly boho feel to the place. From the campsite, a five minute walk takes you to Ninety Mile Beach. It starts just up the coast about 5 mins drive away and stretches almost to the tip of the north island. It is a glorious stretch of coast. Tasman Sea waves crash and roll over soft sand. And the view…

It’s a beach that you can drive on, you need big tyres and a big engine for that!! And there are speed limit reminders along the dunes. We also spotted an unusual flag, the laser eyed kiwi flag. Some years ago the PM of the day decided to have a referendum about the New Zealand flag and invited people to make suggestions for a flag that would replace the current one. Kiwi humour came to the fore. Eventually none were chosen and the flag remains.
